The open-cell weave of a cellular blanket is a deliberate engineering decision, not a textile shortcut. Each air cell in the weave functions as a discrete thermal insulating unit — trapping body heat — while simultaneously providing a pathway for moisture vapour to escape. This dual function prevents the hot, damp microclimate at the skin surface that accelerates bacterial proliferation and increases the risk of skin breakdown. Unlike closed-weave fleece blankets, cellular blankets remain effective even when damp. In maternity and neonatal wards, where thermoregulation is critical and skin integrity is paramount, the cellular weave is the clinically superior choice.
